Friends again

I didn't realize it until I saw this the other day, but Mojo and Gunnar hadn't been cuddling. Maybe for a month or two? I saw this and thought it was so cute and realized I hadn't seen it in a while. They've always been best buds. But a while back, they were playing and Gunnar clawed Mojo on the snout and really hurt Mojo. And Mojo remembered. Gunnar would try to nuzzle Mojo—who carried a grudge. They finally made up this week and are bros again. It warms my heart.

Mouse for breakfast

Gunnar decided to make his own breakfast today. He was having mouse.

He dropped his toy mouse into Mojo's empty food bowl. I'm not sure if he was saying he wanted more mouse on the menu, if he thought Mojo should eat the mouse or if he was simply playing "does it fit?"

At least it's better than in the water bowl, where prized processions often end up.

Always watching

Gunnar wants you to know that he is always watching. And that he knows what you did. And that he'll pounce on your head if he's feeling really evil.

Love my evil cat.

Helping with the sheets

Whenever I change the sheets, the cats just have to help me.

I try to wait for a time when they're not in the room, but then they just come in the room and jump on the sheets so  I can't take them off the bed.

Here's Gunnar and Ozzy helping me put new sheets on.

Ozzy doesn't want to move for me to put the sheets on.

Why are you taking our pictures?

Helping smooth out the wrinkles.

Can't find Ozzy. (This is my favorite picture of the bunch.) Ozzy's fluffy tail and Gunnar ominously looking on.

Gunnar all tucked in.

The nemesis

Do you remember those old episodes of Seinfeld? Jerry had a neighbor called Newman, who was his nemesis. Meet Gunnar's Newman. (You have to say it with the same Seinfeld inflection: "Newman.")

This is a neighbor cat (we think he lives at the townhouse on the end) and Gunnar goes crazy every time this guy is around. He paws furiously at the windows, he wants out. (Possibly because he's jealous of Newman's tail. Newman is a brown tabby like Gunnar but with a tail.)

We don't actually know this cat's name, but even Matt has started calling him Newman.

Mojo chased Newman one day. Newman was rolling in the grass by our house one day. And one morning when I was only half awake I looked at this cat and thought: why is Gunnar outside? Only, he has a tail and really doesn't look like Gunnar.

Let's just hope Gunnar doesn't get out to do whatever he wants to do to Newman.

Well-read kitties

Ozzy and Gunnar were taking turns reading my Kindle. Ozzy's in charge on turning the pages. (And Gunnar lies on any towel I leave lying around.)

They sure are well read kitties.

Holding hands…

The pets like to cuddle and nap together. Gunnar and Mojo were napping on the bed and I saw this and it looked like they were trying to hold hands in their sleep. I thought it looked awfully sweet.

Chef Gunnar

Gunnar found this taco recipe in Real Simple and asked me to make it for dinner.  He's keeping it safe until I start cooking.

Cousins?

Mr. Awesome is the cat that lives at Artinis, a painting place I go to occasionally.

He is a charismatic cat, who loves to rub against the store's patrons. He's a total ham for pictures and he reminds me a lot of Gunnar—if Gunnar weighed a little less and had a tail.

Mr. Awesome.

Gunnar

I don't think the photos do them justice. Oh well.

And I love any business that has a shop cat. :)

Plotting their next move

Ozzy: Gee Gunnar, what do you want to do tonight?

Gunnar: Tonight we take over the world.

The boys. I'm not sure I've ever seen cats in a chair look so sinister. So here they are, Ozzy in my office chair (excuse me, his chair) and Gunnar lounging in a lovely puddle of sunshine. They're up to something.

Changing the sheets

The cats always like to help me change the sheets.

1. They never really want to get off the bed. And one of them is always on the bed.

Here Ozzy gets rolled up in the sheets as I try to change them. He didn't want to budge.

2. If I ever get the sheets off the bed, they are on the mattress cover, on the new sheets, just completely in the way. Here's Ozzy clawing at the new sheet as I try to smooth it down.

And Gunnar comes to join in the fun. Let's sit on the new sheets. We don't need no stinkin' blankets.

And that's how we change sheets at this house. Slowly. With much protest.

Guard duty

Gunnar has tasked himself with keeping my sweaters safe. He really likes these shelves. He likes to sit on my sweaters and watch me work on my computer.

He also likes to jump on top of these shelves and keep an eye out from this angle. It always makes me nervous. One night, I was on the phone with my sister and he hopped in one of those shopping bags and started to shift his weight forward. I ran and got the shopping bag down before he fell. Crazy cat.

Brotherly love

Gunnar and Ozzy are best good buddies. Truly, I didn't know how much Gunnar wanted a brother, but he really did. And since we got Ozzy, they've been inseparable.

And they have this cute routine, where every night one of them, Gunnar likely, will be sleeping on the bed. The other one will hop up on the bed and start grooming the other. The licking turns into a friendly-ish wrestling match until one of them tumbles off the bed, King of the Mountain style. These tumbles will usually happen several times. And eventually they'll just get tired of wrestling and just nap cuddled up together, but with a paw on the other cat—claiming them, holding them down? I'm not sure. It looks like a hug, but I feel like there's a dash of kitty domination thrown in there somewhere.

So that's our boys.

Pukey kitty

Gunnar has been our pukey kitty for a while now. He barfs a lot. Usually at 5:30 a.m. Right by the bed. On the carpet. Or if it's not 5:30 a.m., it's the same time I need to leave for work. We switched the food to hairball control. We took him to the vet. He's been taking Laxatone to break down those hairballs for about a year now. And he was hurling way less. But it started up all over again.

Right after the new year, he started barfing every day. Laxatone wasn't helping. It got to the point where he was walking around, looking miserable. And he lost 2-3 pounds in as many weeks.

Yesterday, he kept hacking. All day long, his head was moving like he was retching. He puked clear liquid several times. It was heart-breaking to watch. It's the sickest my tough guy cat has ever been.

This morning, he went to the vet. After blood work and X-rays, we learned that it was, in fact, just hairballs. A big one in his stomach and another one in his colon.

The vet said that they should pass. But gave Gunnar shots of anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea and some antibiotics because he was running a fever.

So, we hope that Gunnar feels better soon.

2013: Year in Review

2013 apparently was a year I didn't blog very much.

The biggest thing that happened in pet news was that now we have four pets. We added a cat, Ozzy.

Ozzy adopted us. He decided he was going to live on our front porch. He camped out. I was sure we couldn't have another cat. He gave Mojo kisses when we would take him out. He was always around, meowing, rubbing against our legs. Rain or shine. Even in the middle of the night. After a month of cuteness and kisses, he wore us down. Mojo asked why the kitty couldn't come inside when it was so hot out. We gave in. Took the cat to the vet. He got a clean bill of health and the rest is history.

I was very skeptical that this would work out. Another cat! Another boy cat!?!

I shouldn't have worried. Ozzy is a joy and it was the easiest transition ever. Going from 1-2 cats was DIFFICULT. Katie pouted for a year. A year. Going from 2-3 cats—ridiculously easy. Ozzy and Gunnar became fast friends. They nap together. They bathe each other. They play. They are besties and bros and love each other so much. Seriously, I didn't know Gunnar wanted a brother so badly. And because Gunnar now has Ozzy, Gunnar really doesn't bully Katie anymore. Everyone is happier.

I should say that three is a lot of cats. There are cats everywhere at my house. They swarm when it's meal time. Cats are constantly under foot. Any more cats and it's probably crazy cat lady status for me.

And Ozzy. He went from a 9 pound kitten to a GIANT cat. He's easily 15 pounds. The vet warned us he would be big. We thought he had medium length fur when we adopted him, but not only has he filled out, so has his fur. And he's an extremely long haired cat. I've never had a cat with fur this long and luxurious before. And he gets static really badly. We get shocked when we pet the baby. Ozzy's also....obese. When we took him in, he ate like he'd never see another meal. And after 4+ months, he hasn't slowed down. He gets fed the same time every day and overeating is a problem. He eats fast, like he's in one of those televised hot dog eating contests. He eats Katie's food. He eats and eats. Now he waddles around the house and can barely fit through the baby gates. He needs desperately to diet in the New Year.

As for the other kids:

Mojo is still fabulous. He's a happy dog with a contagious smile. He likes walks and other dogs and all of his siblings. He's also very sensitive and doesn't like it when dad yells at the football games on TV. His arthritis is still not great. When he goes over to his grandparents, he tends to overdo it, running up and down their stairs and going crazy in their backyard. He needs pain pills then. He has slimmed down some. He's looking super athletic. He's gone from 73 pounds to a sporty 68.

Katie could stand to eat a little more. (Ozzy!) She's a sweet cat, who at times will demand cuddles. She often can be found sitting in her dad's lap. She's a daddy's girl. She still likes ham, so when she's looking too thin, that's what we give her. She still likes to jump on my chest 20 minutes after lights out and then demand under the blanket a few times, and then she would really like to sleep in the spot between our heads. Seriously.

Gunnar is still our evil emperor. He likes to follow me around, sleep in the bed, oversee any exercising I do. But now he has a partner in crime. Gunnar and Ozzy like to chase each other around the house. They like to play king of the mountain and wrestle at the foot of the bed, until one or both of them fall off of the bed. The wrestle often starts with licks and is the weird combination of sweet grooming and bopping each other in the face. I guess that's what brothers do.

So, we live in a house full of pet fur. And with all of the pets trying to sneak in the bed during the night, I'm not sure our bed is really big enough for two people, a large dog and three cats. My allergist isn't too happy with that....but you can't tell cats what to do.

Napping kitties

Katie and Gunnar have never really been besties. Gunnar's a bit of a bully to Katie. But with the addition of Ozzy, it's actually really balanced things out. Gunnar spends more of his time playing with Ozzy and palling around with him. And Katie is spared. There's actually more peace in the house with three kitties. Apparently Gunnar just needed a little brother? (Who might be bigger than him.)

So here's some photographic evidence of peace in kitty land. Katie and Gunnar sleeping in the same vicinity as each other.

Gunnar sure appreciates his mom's online shopping. So many great boxes to fit in!

Brotherly Love

Apparently this is the kind of stuff I miss when I go to work. I stayed home from work today (sick) and Mojo and Gunnar came and got in the bed and then took turns grooming each other :)

These guys are the best.

Cockadoodledoo

Every morning, Gunnar swarms around me and follows me around until he gets his breakfast. After he's had his breakfast, he climbs on top of this tall white table and MEOWS as loud as he can.

But what is he saying?

Matt suggested that it was just like a rooster crowing.

So why does a rooster crow?

To establish dominance in his territory.

So every morning, Gunnar cries out that he is emperor of Wiltshire Drive and that none are greater.

Good to know, Emperor Gunnar, good to know.

Little brother

Hanging out.

So far, Ozzy's been a pretty good little brother to Gunnar. It's funny to watch him emulate Gunnar and his behaviors.

  • He likes the same spots: Hiding under the chairs at the dining table, flopping on the dining room table, sleeping on the foot of the bed.
  • He has a similar flop style.
  • He likes to wait for Mojo at the front door. So when Mojo comes back from walks, there are two kitties peering out the front door at him.
  • Ozzy and Gunnar wrestle. (No claws out.) They'll roll around a little until one of them runs off.
  • They both have a similar obsession with the litter box in the morning. Gunnar used to like to use it as soon as I scooped it, and then use multiple litter boxes. Ozzy's up to the same tricks, using multiple litter boxes within minutes of each other.
  • And of course, the morning ritual for all the kitties is to swam outside the bathroom door while I brush my teeth. With three, it's definitely more of a swarm now. And they both follow me around while I'm feeding the cats and Mojo. They are not above begging for treats.
